A Brief History
A Brief History of the Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club
The Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club was established in 1963, born from tragedy and driven by community spirit. Its formation was a direct response to a heartbreaking drowning incident in 1958, where a local family lost their lives along the rugged coastline—highlighting the urgent need for organised surf rescue services.
What began with a small group of passionate volunteers has grown into a thriving non-profit organisation with over 400 members. For more than six decades, the club has provided vital coastal rescue services, keeping locals and visitors safe at one of Victoria’s most iconic beaches.
Beyond patrolling the beach, the club is committed to surf education, water safety awareness, and youth development. It also proudly represents the region in life-saving competitions across Victoria, fostering skills, fitness, and teamwork.
Today, the Port Campbell Surf Life Saving Club remains a cornerstone of the community—protecting lives, educating the public, and preserving the legacy of those whose loss inspired its founding.
